Patience & Hard Times

Duas for patience during loss, grief, depression, and overwhelming difficulty — from the Quran and Sunnah.

1. Dua Upon Any Calamity or Loss

Quran 2:156 + Muslim

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Allahumma ajurni fi musibati wakhluf li khayran minha

Translation

Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me for my calamity and replace it with something better.

💡

The Prophet ﷺ said: "No Muslim who suffers a calamity says this… except Allah compensates him with something better." Umm Salamah (RA) said this when her husband died and received the Prophet ﷺ in marriage.

2. Dua for Depression and Overwhelm

Mustadrak al-Hakim (authenticated)

Translation

O Living, O Sustainer — by Your mercy I seek relief! Rectify all my affairs and do not leave me to myself for the blink of an eye.

💡

A powerful dua taught to Fatimah (RA). Recite when overwhelmed, depressed, or feeling hopeless. Al-Hayyu (the Ever-Living) and Al-Qayyum (the Self-Sustaining) are two of the greatest names of Allah.

3. Dua of Grief — Complaining Only to Allah

Quran 12:86

Innama ashku bathhi wa huzni ilallah

Translation

I only complain of my suffering and grief to Allah.

💡

The words of Yaqub (AS) when overwhelmed by grief for Yusuf — so deep he wept until his eyes turned white. Recite when heartbroken, grieving a loved one, or suffering a loss that cannot be shared with others. It is a declaration that Allah alone is your confidant.

4. Dua for Sabr (Patience) During Trials

Ibn Abi Shaybah

Allahumma inni as'alukas-sabra 'indal-bala', wash-shukra 'indan-na'ma', war-rida 'indal-qada'

Translation

O Allah, I ask You for patience in trials, gratitude in blessings, and contentment with Your decree.

💡

Covers all three conditions of a believer: patience in hardship, gratitude in ease, and acceptance of whatever Allah decrees. Recite when facing a long trial or when patience feels impossible.

5. Dua of the Oppressed (Mazloom)

Guidance from the Sunnah

Allahumma innaka ta'lamu ma zulimtu fantasir li

Translation

O Allah, You know what has been done to me unjustly — so grant me justice.

💡

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The dua of the oppressed is answered, even if they are a sinner — for their sin is against themselves alone." (Ahmad). There is no veil between the dua of the mazloom and Allah. Make dua with certainty.
