✅ Halal Guide
The Halal Guide
A complete guide to what is halal (permissible) and haram (forbidden) in Islam — covering food, drink, finance, and daily life.
What Does Halal Mean?
Halal (حلال) means "permissible" or "lawful" in Arabic. In Islam, it refers to everything that Allah has permitted in the Quran and through the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Its opposite is haram (حرام) — that which is forbidden.
The Quran says: "O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good." (2:168). The concept of halal extends beyond food to finance, clothing, relationships, and all aspects of a Muslim's life.
✅ Halal (Permissible)
- Beef, lamb, chicken, turkey (correctly slaughtered)
- All seafood (fish, shrimp, crab — with some scholarly differences)
- Fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy, eggs
- Halal-certified processed foods
❌ Haram (Forbidden)
- Pork and all pork derivatives
- Alcohol and intoxicants
- Blood and blood products
- Animals not slaughtered Islamically
Halal Slaughter (Dhabihah)
For meat to be halal, the animal must be slaughtered according to Islamic rites (dhabihah):
The slaughterer
Must be a Muslim, Christian, or Jew — a person of the Book.
Intention & Tasmiyah
Must say "Bismillah" (in the name of Allah) at the time of slaughter.
The cut
A swift, deep cut severing the windpipe, oesophagus, and both jugular veins — minimising suffering.
Blood drainage
The blood must be fully drained from the carcass — blood is haram.
The animal
Must be a halal species (cow, sheep, goat, chicken, etc.) and must be alive and healthy at slaughter.
E-Numbers & Food Additives
Many packaged foods contain E-numbers — food additives that may have haram sources. Key ones to watch:
Cochineal / Carmine
Derived from insects — forbidden by majority of scholars.
Gelatin
Usually pork-derived. Must be certified halal or bovine.
Mono & Diglycerides
Can be animal or plant-derived. Check for halal certification.
Glycerol
Can be animal, plant, or synthetic. Halal if plant/synthetic.
Disodium guanylate
Typically from fish or yeast — usually halal but verify.
Beeswax
From bees — halal.
Halal Finance — Mortgages, Crypto & Investments
Interest (riba) is explicitly prohibited in the Quran (2:275–279). This applies to conventional mortgages, credit cards, loans, and interest-bearing savings. Islamic finance offers Sharia-compliant alternatives:
Diminishing Musharaka
Halal mortgage — you and the bank co-own the property. You buy the bank's share gradually while paying rent. The most common Islamic home finance structure.
Murabaha
Cost-plus financing — bank buys the asset and sells to you at an agreed fixed mark-up, paid in instalments. No interest.
Ijara (Lease-to-Own)
Bank purchases and leases the property to you. Ownership transfers at the end of the term.
Sukuk
Islamic bonds — asset-backed Sharia-compliant investments, an alternative to interest-bearing bonds.
📊 Crypto & Forex
Spot Forex (immediate exchange) — generally permissible. Leveraged/margin Forex — haram (riba + gharar). Crypto as currency — permitted by some scholars. Speculative crypto trading — most scholars consider it close to maysir (gambling).
🏠 Conventional Mortgages
Haram — riba is explicitly forbidden in the Quran (2:275–279). Seek an Islamic mortgage provider offering Diminishing Musharaka or Murabaha. Some scholars permit conventional mortgages in cases of dire necessity (darura) where no Islamic alternative exists.
Is Music Haram in Islam?
Music is one of the most searched Islamic questions. The majority of classical scholars (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) prohibited musical instruments, citing Quran 31:6 ("idle talk that misleads from the way of Allah") and several hadith. The daff (hand drum) was permitted for weddings and Eid.
✅ Unanimously Permissible
- Quran recitation
- Nasheeds (vocal only)
- Daff at weddings & Eid
- Children's rhymes
⚠️ Scholarly Disagreement
- Instrumental music
- Background music
- Songs without harmful lyrics
- Photography & video
❌ Unanimously Haram
- Music that promotes sin
- Songs glorifying haram
- Music used in worship of other than Allah
- Listening to lewd lyrics
Tattoos, Drawing & Images in Islam
🖋️ Tattoos
❌ Permanent tattoos — Haram
The Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who makes tattoos and the one who receives them (Bukhari & Muslim). They permanently alter Allah's creation and (Hanafi) prevent water reaching skin during wudu/ghusl.
✅ Henna & temporary art — Permissible
Henna (mehndi) and temporary body art are permissible, provided they contain no haram ingredients and are not used in imitation of non-Islamic religious practices.
🎨 Drawing & Animation
Classical scholars prohibited drawing humans and animals with facial features (based on Bukhari & Muslim hadith warning image-makers). Contemporary scholars debate photography, cartoons, and animation — many permit them for education and non-glorifying use.
