Tarawih Prayer — How Many Rakats?

20 rakats

Majority position

Established by Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) with the consensus of the Companions. Followed by the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools. Standard in most mosques worldwide including Masjid al-Nabawi and Masjid al-Haram.

8 rakats

Alternative view

Based on the Tahajjud prayer the Prophet ﷺ prayed (Bukhari, Muslim). Held by some contemporary scholars. Both positions have scholarly backing — either is valid to pray in congregation.

Tarawih is prayed after Isha prayer every night of Ramadan. It is a Sunnah Mu'akkadah — highly confirmed Sunnah, not obligatory. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever stands in prayer in Ramadan with faith and seeking reward will have his past sins forgiven." (Bukhari & Muslim)

Witr (3 rakats in Hanafi, 1+ in others) is prayed after Tarawih as the last prayer of the night.

The Virtues of Ramadan

"Whoever fasts during Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven." — Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Bukhari & Muslim)

Ramadan Fasting — Common Questions

Rulings based on the four major Sunni schools of fiqh. Consult your local scholar for individual circumstances.

When does suhoor (sehri) end? +
Suhoor ends at the Fajr adhan — when the pre-dawn call to prayer begins. You must stop eating and drinking at this moment. It is Sunnah to delay suhoor as close to Fajr time as possible. Select your city for today's Fajr time.
What time is iftar today? +
Iftar begins at the Maghrib adhan — immediately when the sun sets. The time changes every day. It is Sunnah to break the fast promptly when Maghrib begins, starting with dates and water before praying Maghrib.
What is the difference between suhoor, sehri, and sahur? +
They are all the same thing — the pre-dawn meal eaten before the Fajr adhan. 'Suhoor' is the Arabic term. 'Sehri' (or 'seheri') is the Urdu/Persian word used in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India. 'Sahur' is used in Turkey and some Arab countries.
Does swallowing toothpaste break the fast? +
Yes — if toothpaste is swallowed intentionally, the fast is broken and qada is required. If you brush carefully and spit completely without swallowing, the fast is valid but makruh (disliked). Using miswak is preferable during the fast.
Does vomiting break the fast? +
Involuntary vomiting does NOT break the fast. Intentionally inducing vomiting DOES break the fast and qada is required. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever is overcome by vomiting is not required to make it up, but whoever vomits intentionally must make it up.' (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud)
Does using an inhaler break the fast? +
Scholars are divided. The majority contemporary position is that a reliever inhaler breaks the fast because a substance enters the lungs. Use your inhaler if medically needed and make qada after Ramadan. Some scholars (Islamic Fiqh Academy) permit inhalers due to medical necessity (darura). Your health comes first.
Who is exempt from fasting in Ramadan? +
Those exempt: (1) Children before puberty, (2) The elderly or chronically ill — they pay Fidyah, (3) Travellers — make qada later, (4) Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or menstruating — make qada, (5) Anyone acutely ill — fast when recovered. Fasting is only obligatory on sane, adult Muslims who are physically able.
Does having blood drawn or an injection break the fast? +
Injections and blood tests do not break the fast according to the majority of scholars, because nothing edible enters the stomach. IV saline and medication injections are also generally considered not to break the fast. IV nutrition drips would break the fast.
What is Laylat al-Qadr and when is it in Ramadan 2027? +
Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Power) is the most blessed night of the year — better than 1,000 months (Quran 97:3). In Ramadan 2027, the most likely nights are the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th of Ramadan (approximately 10–18 March 2027). Recite often: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni.
