How to Pray Istikhara

Salat al-Istikhara is the Islamic prayer for divine guidance — performed before any significant decision. Two rakats and a powerful dua, asking Allah to guide you toward what is truly good.

📖 Hadith — The Source of Istikhara

"The Prophet ﷺ used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara (seeking Allah's guidance) in all matters as he taught us the Surahs of the Quran. He said: 'If any one of you thinks of doing any matter, let him pray two rakats other than the obligatory prayers, and then say…'"
— Jabir ibn Abdullah, Sahih al-Bukhari 1166

Step-by-Step: How to Perform Salat al-Istikhara

1

Have a specific decision in mind

Istikhara is for specific decisions you are genuinely uncertain about — a marriage proposal, a job offer, a significant move. It is not for decisions that are clearly obligatory or clearly prohibited in Islam.

2

Perform Wudu

Make full Wudu (ablution) as you would before any prayer. Ensure your clothes and place of prayer are clean.

3

Pray 2 rakats

Pray 2 rakats of voluntary prayer with the intention of Istikhara. You may recite any surah after Al-Fatiha. The Prophet ﷺ recommended Surah Al-Kafirun (109) in the first rakat and Surah Al-Ikhlas (112) in the second, though any surah is valid.

4

Recite the Istikhara dua

After completing the 2 rakats, while still in a state of prayer (before Tasleem or just after), recite the Istikhara dua in full. Insert your specific matter at the point indicated in the dua.

5

Proceed with the matter

After making Istikhara, proceed with whatever feels right in your heart. Do not wait for a dream. The guidance may come as a feeling of ease or difficulty, through circumstances that open or close, or through the advice of people around you. Trust that Allah is guiding your affairs.

English Translation

"O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allah, if in Your knowledge [this matter — and here you name the specific matter] is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs — or in the short-term and the long-term — then ordain it for me, make it easy for me and bless me in it. And if in Your knowledge this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs — or in the short-term and the long-term — then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it."

Note: At the place marked [this matter], mention your specific decision in your heart or in your own words — for example: "this marriage to [name]" or "this job offer" or "this move." You do not need to insert it in Arabic.

What to Expect After Istikhara — Common Misconceptions

❌ Common misconceptions

  • • You must see a specific dream
  • • A dream of white/green = yes, black/red = no
  • • You must feel a sudden sign or sense
  • • You need to repeat it exactly 7 times
  • • It only works if you sleep right after

✅ What scholars actually teach

  • • Proceed with what inclines in your heart
  • • Take practical steps — consult people
  • • Notice if circumstances open or close
  • • Trust that Allah is answering in His way
  • • Accept whatever outcome with contentment

Ibn al-Qayyim wrote: "Whoever performs Istikhara will not be disappointed, and whoever consults others will not regret it." The point of Istikhara is to surrender the outcome to Allah — not to receive a guaranteed signal. After making the prayer and doing your due diligence, proceed with what seems right, and trust Allah's will in the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Salat al-Istikhara?

Salat al-Istikhara (صلاة الاستخارة) is a voluntary 2-rakat prayer performed when a Muslim faces an important decision and seeks Allah's guidance. 'Istikhara' means 'seeking what is good' — asking Allah to guide one toward what is beneficial and away from what is harmful. It is established in an authentic hadith narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah in Sahih al-Bukhari (1166).

When should you pray Istikhara?

Pray Istikhara when facing a specific decision you are genuinely uncertain about — such as a marriage proposal, accepting a job, making a significant purchase, relocating, or choosing between two options. Istikhara is not required for clearly obligatory acts (like paying Zakat or praying) or clearly prohibited acts. It is for the grey area of permissible choices where you need divine guidance.

How many times should you pray Istikhara?

There is no fixed number. Some scholars say once is sufficient; others say to repeat it up to 7 times. The Prophet ﷺ taught it as a single prayer in the hadith. If after praying once you still feel uncertain, it is fine to repeat it. The key is not the number of times but the sincerity of turning to Allah for guidance.

Do you have to see a dream after Istikhara?

No. Waiting for a specific dream or sign after Istikhara is not required and is a common misconception. After performing Istikhara sincerely, proceed with what feels right in your heart. Guidance comes through ease or difficulty in circumstances, through the advice of trusted people, or through a general sense of peace or discomfort. Dreams are not a required outcome.

Can you pray Istikhara at any time?

Yes, with the same restrictions as all voluntary prayers — Istikhara should not be prayed during the three prohibited times: at sunrise, at solar noon, and at sunset. Outside of these three brief windows, it may be prayed at any time of day or night, including after Isha before sleeping.

Can a woman pray Istikhara during her menstrual period?

During menstruation, a woman cannot perform the 2-rakat prayer. However, she can still make the Istikhara dua (supplication) alone without the prayer. She should make dua with sincerity and trust that Allah hears her supplications regardless of her ritual state.
