History of East London Mosque
The East London Mosque was founded in 1941 and moved to its current purpose-built complex in Whitechapel in 1985. The mosque and the adjacent London Muslim Centre (opened 2004) together can accommodate over 7,000 worshippers across multiple prayer halls. It serves the large British Bangladeshi community of Tower Hamlets and Muslims from across East London and beyond. The mosque runs an Islamic school, full funeral service, counselling, a food bank, and one of the UK's leading revert support programmes.
