History of Yeşil Cami (Green Mosque)
The Yeşil Cami (Green Mosque) was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed I and completed in 1419. It takes its name from the green and turquoise Iznik tiles that adorn its interior, which are among the finest surviving examples of early Ottoman tilework. The adjacent Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb) contains the sultan's sarcophagus and is equally celebrated.
