History of Great Mosque of Sousse

The Great Mosque of Sousse was completed in 851 CE under the Aghlabid emir Ahmad ibn Muhammad. Unlike most mosques, it has no minaret — its large square tower doubled as a watchtower for the adjacent ribat. The mosque features a beautiful colonnaded courtyard and prayer hall and is one of the finest surviving examples of Aghlabid-era Islamic architecture.
