Say, He is Allah, [who is] One,

2

Allah, the Eternal Refuge.

3

He neither begets nor is born,

4

Nor is there to Him any equivalent.

Transliteration

Qul huwa Allahu ahad. Allahu as-samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.

Meaning of Each Verse

1

'Say' (qul) — Allah commands the Prophet to declare this truth. 'He is Allah, One' (Allahu Ahad) — not merely 'one in number' but uniquely singular; there is nothing in existence like Him in His divinity.

2

'As-Samad' is among the greatest of Allah's names and has no perfect English equivalent. It encompasses: the Eternally Self-Sufficient, the one to whom all creation turns in need, who is not in need of anything, and who is completely whole and perfect.

3

A direct refutation of two major errors: the claim that Allah has a son (as in some traditions) and the claim that He was born or emerged from something. Allah is beyond all human and biological concepts.

4

'Kufuwan' means equal, comparable, or equivalent. There is nothing in all of existence — no human, no angel, no concept, no thing — that can be compared to Allah. This verse closes the surah by making the incomparability of Allah absolute.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Surah Al-Ikhlas mean?

Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112) means 'The Sincerity' or 'The Purity of Faith.' It is a declaration of pure monotheism (Tawheed), affirming that Allah is One, Self-Sufficient (As-Samad), was not born and has no children, and that nothing is equal to Him. It encapsulates the Islamic concept of God in four verses.

Is Surah Al-Ikhlas equal to a third of the Quran?

Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad is equal to a third of the Quran.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5013, Sahih Muslim 811). The scholars explain this because the Quran covers three primary themes: stories (qasas), rulings (ahkam), and the knowledge of Allah's names and attributes (tawheed). Surah Al-Ikhlas covers the third theme entirely, so reciting it three times equals the full Quran in reward.

When should I read Surah Al-Ikhlas?

Surah Al-Ikhlas should be read: (1) every morning and evening 3 times as part of the morning and evening adhkar — the Prophet ﷺ said it is sufficient to protect you for the day and night, (2) after every obligatory prayer once (3 times on Fajr and Maghrib), (3) before sleeping with Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas, and (4) in voluntary prayers (it is Sunnah in the 2nd rakat of Witr and the 2 Sunnah rakats of Fajr).

Why did Allah reveal Surah Al-Ikhlas?

The Quraysh polytheists asked the Prophet ﷺ to describe Allah — asking about His lineage and nature. Surah Al-Ikhlas was revealed in response (Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3364). It answers the most fundamental question about the nature of God: He is One, uniquely Self-Sufficient, without origin or offspring, and absolutely incomparable to anything in creation.
