History of Masjid Umar ibn al-Khattab (Jerusalem)
Masjid Umar in Jerusalem commemorates the site where Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) prayed after the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem in 638 CE. Patriarch Sophronius invited Umar to pray inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, but Umar declined to preserve the church as a Christian site, choosing to pray outside. A mosque was subsequently built on the spot where he prayed. The current structure dates largely from the Ayyubid period (12th century).
