History of Hassan Tower (Tour Hassan Mosque)
The Hassan Tower was begun in 1195 by Almohad Sultan Yaqub al-Mansur, who intended it to be the minaret of the world's largest mosque. Construction halted upon the sultan's death in 1199, leaving the tower at half its planned height of 86 metres. The surrounding mosque columns were destroyed by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The tower now stands as a symbol of Moroccan identity alongside the Mausoleum of Mohammed V.
