History of Al-Andalus Mosque

The Al-Andalus Mosque was founded in 859 CE, the same year as Al-Qarawiyyin, by Maryam al-Fihri, sister of Fatima al-Fihri. It was built to serve the Andalusian Muslim refugees who had settled in the eastern part of Fez el-Bali. The two sister mosques — Al-Qarawiyyin and Al-Andalus — were the twin pillars of Islamic learning in medieval Fez.
