About Süleymaniye Mosque

The Süleymaniye Mosque was designed by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan and built between 1550 and 1558 on the order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. It is widely considered Sinan's most accomplished work — he is himself buried in a tomb in the garden. The mosque dominates the Third Hill of Istanbul and is visible from across the Golden Horn. Its interior, lit by 138 stained-glass windows, achieves a luminous quality that epitomises Ottoman spatial mastery.
